This scenic themed hiking trail provides information about the presence of the sweet chestnut at the foot of the Rigi. Chestnuts once played an important role in nutrition. Even today, relics of chestnut groves and sweet chestnut trees can be spotted.

The Rigi-Chestene-Weg begins at the Hohle Gasse in Immensee, a historic landmark of Switzerland. According to legend, Gessler was shot here by Wilhelm Tell with a crossbow. A small chapel nearby commemorates this and can be visited. Walking southwards, you enjoy a wonderful view of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug. The path continues uphill to the ruins of Gesslerburg (approx. 45 min). Below this castle is a shaded family fireplace area. After another 100 meters of elevation gain, you reach Alpenhof, an authentically renovated country inn with a shaded garden restaurant and a large children's playground. At this height, the Chestene-Weg, with only briefly ascending sections, leads through beautiful fields and meadows via Hof Lantschi – Klösterli – Rotenhof to Greppen. Greppen, an idyllic small village, has a bus stop. A gentle ascent leads you out of Greppen, then the path descends again. The breathtaking panorama now shows the majestic Pilatus, the Central Swiss Pre-Alps with Stanserhorn and Bürgenstock, and the lake basin of Küssnacht. Soon the trail forks: the Chestene-Weg continues to the “Zingeli,” with views of the lake and mountain panorama, plus a postcard view of the village of Weggis. You then reach another junction: the Chestene-Weg continues to Vitznau, and another path leads down to the center of Weggis, where you find bus and boat stops again.
