Every five years the Weggis Farmers’ Association celebrates its farmers` festival with a procession, games and entertainment. A traditional popular festival where local customs are still very much alive.
The Farmers’ Association was founded in 1686, the year in which foot-and-mouth disease ravaged the Rigi region and surrounding area. The great loss of livestock drove many farming families to the brink of their existence and as a result, the local farmers established the Weggis Farmers’ Association. The founding members made a solemn vow to put their trust in God’s protection from any further epidemics and diseases.
